The 27th championship has been accomplished in the opening of the new Yankee Stadium. Hideki Matsui delivered 6 RBIs to tie the record for a single World Series game. Andy Pettitte got his 18th career postseason win.

| Cliff Lee did not exhibit the same dominance as Game 1 but was effective enough to escape with a win thanks to Chase Utley. Alex Rodriguez's 3 RBI night tied the single postseason RBI record for the franchise. Chase Utley's two home runs tied Reggie Jackson for the home runs in a World Series. Ryan Howard also set a record which hitters would prefer not to. He tied Willie Wilson's record for 12 strikeouts in a World Series. Down by 6, the New York Yankees staged their usual comeback but fell short as Mark Teixeira struck out swinging as the tying run.

| After a bomb of a home run off of reliever, Joba Chamberlain, Brad Lidge reverted to the regular season ineffective relier he is. After getting two outs, the inning fell apart. Johnny Damon hard fought for a single. Afterwards, a bizarre two base steal due to the extreme right shift of the infield allowing Johhny Damon to outrun Pedro Feliz, the 3rd baseman who caught the attempt at catching the stealing Johnny Damon at 2nd base. Following this, Mark Teixeira was hit by a pitch and Alex Rodriguez delivered a tie-breaking double.

| Andy Pettitte was effective all over the field. Not only did he hold the Phillies down long enough for the win, he also provided an run-scoring single that tied the game and became the leading run in that same inning.

Personal note: I believe Joe Girardi is overmanaging and overusing his safety blanket, Mariano Rivera. I understand that he's one of the greatest, if not the greatest, postseason closer of all-time but sometimes the situation does not call for his appearance. I felt that this game was one of the games that Girardi could have expressed faith in his bullpen but he turned to him yet again.

| A.J. Burnett took on the roll of stopper as he went 7 strong innings with 9 strikeouts to be his own bridge to all-star closer Mariano Rivera. Courtesy of two home runs by Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui, the New York Yankees welcomed back Pedro Martinez with just enough to make his outstanding effort, a losing effort.
